Vandalism at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary documented in this photo from an anonymous SEBTS student who would rather not be named because he hopes to one day infiltrate a Southern Baptist church with his non-traditional theology.

These are the kind of aggressive and militant Calvinists everyone has been talking about.

They can’t even spell correctly!  Continue Reading…

Below is the image that greets you when visiting Pastor Bob Hadley’s church website. I’m not sure what to make of it, though, it did make me laugh. One can be sure, whatever Westside Baptist Church “is”, it is certainly NOT Calvinistic or Reformed.

Below are three humorous examples of how Old Testament scholars would interpret a Stop sign. These three examples come form a larger list titled Hermeneutics in Everyday Life by Tim Perry. Continue Reading…

Here are a few laughable tweets from the twittersphere this week. Emir Caner’s tweet of SWBTS President Paige Patterson’s anti-Reformed statement takes the cake. If you are curious what Patterson meant by the statement, Malcolm Yarnell offers his interpretation. Ergun Caner links the attendance of seminary students at a conference held at their own seminary, for school credit, as a powerful statement of Anabaptist loyalty. Evangelist Billy Ingram gives a drive-by smattering of the evils of Calvinism. Zach Wagner “proves” Calvinism breeds anger.

What a week!

While giving a lecture at Baylor’s Truett Seminary, New Testament scholar and professor at Duke Divinity School Richard Hays shared a funny and yet sad story of a student’s confusion regarding the faith of Judaism and Christianity. The context of the story is a discussion on the modern church being almost Marcionite in their practice of biblical instruction and reflection. The story received much laughter to which Hays was thankful: “I’m glad that line got a laugh. Among Methodist audiences they sometimes look at me blankly when I have told that story.”

I once had a student say to me in class, “Judaism was a harsh religion that taught people to fear God’s judgment. But thank goodness Jesus came along and taught us to love God with all our heart, and soul, and strength.”

Deuteronomy 6:4-5 is at the heart of Judaism, not fear of judgment. Continue Reading…

Paul Copan Has A Problem

Joshua —  January 17, 2012 — Leave a comment

Paul Copan, President of the Evangelical Philosophical Society, has a problem. This video was shown before his first plenary session at the Defend the Faith Apologetics conference down at NOBTS last week. I will be writing a review of the conference soon. For now, enjoy the “intervention.”

As I was studying for my Hosea 2 paper I came across this gem in Douglas Stuart’s commentary on Hosea-Jonah. Being raised in and currently residing in the “Bible-belt,” I thought this was great.

Orthodox Yahwism had become a small minority religion in Israel by Hosea’s time, judging from the consistently discouraging reports of its status in the historical books and the prophets. While Judah, Canaan’s “Bible-belt,” had perhaps resisted the encroachment of foreign religious practices somewhat more effectively than had the north (1:7), Israel was no place for Hosea to find a sympathetic audience. (p 10)

Enjoy this well done parody of Rob Bell’s Love Wins promo video. Some people think Christians have no sense of humor.

The Humor of C.S. Lewis

Joshua —  March 20, 2011 — Leave a comment

This week, the C.S. Lewis class at Louisiana College will begin reading C.S. Lewis’ The Weight of Glory. Reading through the introduction I came across a funny story by the editor Walter Hooper that I thought would be great to share. Continue Reading…
