Louisiana College Scheduled Sanders Lecture Series Speaker Calvin Miller Passes Away

Calvin Miller, Southern Baptist pastor, author and speaker, suddenly passed away on Sunday. Miller had been ill only a few days before passing. Ed Stetzer has a great tribute posted on his blog. The tribute states:

A native of Enid, Oklahoma, Dr. Miller was a faithful servant of the church. Though he only pastored two churches in his lifetime, his 25-years of service at Westside Church in Omaha, Nebraska, shaped his ministry and that of many others. Under his leadership, Westside grew from 10 members to over 2,500 when he left to join the faculty of Southwestern Seminary in 1991. Since 1999, Dr. Miller had served at Beeson Divinity School (one of my alma maters).

Miller was scheduled to speak at Louisiana College’s annual Sanders Lecture Series in September. Recent speakers for the annual three day lecture series has included Don Whitney (watch here), Paige Patterson, Jim Shaddix, and Craig Blomberg.

I realize I’m in a very small minority, but I was never particularly fond of Dr. Miller’s teachings. I prayed for him when I heard of his heart surgery, was sorry to hear of his passing, and pray for his family now, but as a professor I wasn’t all that crazy about him, from his disorganized material to his aggressive egalitarianism to a few other issues. I don’t mean to speak ill of the recently deceased, so I’ve kept my mouth shut except in this one corner of the web where I free myself to vent a wee bit. :)

      Chris.

I was unaware of Miller and his writings until a few days ago when a friend told me of Miller’s poor health. I’ve neve read a sentence of his writings. I find it odd that we would have an egalitarian come speak at Louisiana College in light of the recent (past 10 years) happenings among the faculty and administration here. I too pray for his family during this time. Must be good to be with the Lord! That is our hope.

I don’t know whether or not his egalitarian views were widely known. He made no secret of them in the classroom, often speaking clearly against (and even belittling toward) complementarianism.
