Louisiana Alumni Magazine ColumnsLast week it was announced that Josh Breland and I were under investigation for posting “disparaging comments” against Louisiana College online. Our blogs, SBC Heritage and the Daily Bleat as well as LCStudents.org, were blocked from the Louisiana College network.

On February 19, 2013 as a result from unwarranted pressure from the administration and at risk of remaining in school and facing charges of student handbook violation I withdrew from classes. The consequences of those charges could entail suspension, which would result in failure. I was not willing to risk my academic record by remaining in school at Louisiana College so I withdrew from classes. Continue Reading…

Dr. Jason Meyer (Ph.D. Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is now officially installed as Pastor for Preaching and Vision by the elders at Bethlehem Baptist Church (BBC) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Meyer is filling the position that John Piper has recently vacated. He also serves as a professor at BBC’s Bethlehem College and Seminary.

As mentioned before on this blog, Meyer was a Southern Baptist before joining BBC a few years ago. He taught at my alma mater Louisiana College in Pineville, Louisiana. Though I transferred to Louisiana College the semester following his departure, he left a huge impact on many Louisiana College students.

The installation service for Meyer was sobering and God glorifying. I am sure a video of the service will surface online soon, but for now here are 10 images from the service.

Join me in praying for Dr. Meyer, his wife and children, and Bethlehem Baptist Church during this time of transition.

LifeWay Research is reporting that recent data they have acquired reveals that most pastors are against political endorsements in the pulpit.

I find the data encouraging as I am strongly against pastors making political endorsements from the pulpit. Though, I am not against the freedom to do so.

As the great theologian Bob Dylan crooned, “the times they are a’changin’.” A Mississippi man recently had to battle the state for his right to adopt his wife’s last name. While this may seem odd to us here in the Bible belt, it takes place without incident elsewhere in the country. The state of Mississippi wasn’t quite prepared for the Mississippian’s request. When all was said and done, the ACLU worked their magic and made sure Mr. McCarthy became Mr. Everhart. Good for you, sir.

Today marks the official launch of a new Southern Baptist group blog called SBC Focus. I am joining pastors Chris Roberts and Scott Gordon in this collaborative blog that hopes to fill a need in the SBC blogosphere. From the about section of the site:

It is our hope that SBC Focus serves as a way to present people with the face of Calvinism in the SBC. We want to show what it means to be a Southern Baptist who believes the theology commonly referred to as Calvinism. This website is not simply a place to argue for Calvinistic theology, though that will occur; this website is a place to offer a picture of the ministry commitments of Calvinists in the SBC. Along the way, we hope that people will realize that Calvinism is not an insidious evil and Calvinists are not the enemy. We hope to provide people a more accurate look at the theology of Calvinism and the ministry of Calvinists.

This blog exists to fill a void that currently exists in the SBC Blogosphere.

For more on why I am contributing to the site, view my post Why I Contribute to SBC Focus.

You can follow SBC Focus on Twitter here, like us on Facebook here, and Google + here.

Illustration from Alliance Design Group showing a future quad area surrounded by four resident dormitories. Two dormitories, College Drive Apartments and Ware Street Apartments, are already open.

Louisiana College, owned by the Louisiana Baptist Convention, has just opened a new 45 person male dorm on campus. I live right down the street from the dorm and enjoyed watching Tudor Construction erect the building from the ground up. My wife and I were amazed at the speed of the construction. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

I am blessed to be leaving Sunday for the Southern Baptist Convention’s Annual Meeting in New Orleans, La. This is my first Annual Meeting and I am very excited to be meeting many folks that I have only known through emails and blog conversations. It is going to be a great experience!

A few months ago, I started a web site called SBC Twit. This site is a live stream of Southern Bapist tweets that refresh every few seconds. The site monitors several hashtags and thus it is a unique feed of all things SBC.

During the Secret Church 2012 event a few months ago, SBCTwit.com performed much better than I had imagined. Because of all the tweeting related to the event, the site was abuzz with Secret Church attendees’ tweets rolling in from around the country. It was awesome!

It is my hope and expectation that the Annual Meeting next week will be abuzz with tweets from the floor and the varying events. SBC Twit will be the perfect place to watch the tweets roll in and read from folks on the ground.

How to Connect

There are three ways to connect:

1. Follow @SBCTwit on Twitter

2. Like SBC TWIT on FaceBook

3. Visit SBCTwit.com

I will be tweeting from the floor of the Morial Convention Center and look forward to speaking with you on Twitter during the 3 days in NOLA!

Last night, Jason Meyer was confirmed by members of Bethlehem Baptist Church (BBC) to eventually replace John Piper as Pastor for Preaching and Vision.

I am thankful that BBC has had such a smooth process of calling a replacement for their pastor and thankful that it is former Louisiana College professor Dr. Jason Meyer. Continue Reading…
