Louisiana Alumni Magazine ColumnsLast week it was announced that Josh Breland and I were under investigation for posting “disparaging comments” against Louisiana College online. Our blogs, SBC Heritage and the Daily Bleat as well as LCStudents.org, were blocked from the Louisiana College network.

On February 19, 2013 as a result from unwarranted pressure from the administration and at risk of remaining in school and facing charges of student handbook violation I withdrew from classes. The consequences of those charges could entail suspension, which would result in failure. I was not willing to risk my academic record by remaining in school at Louisiana College so I withdrew from classes. Continue Reading…

I have said recently on this blog and elsewhere that a battle over Calvinism need not take place here at Louisiana College, the Louisiana Baptist Convention, or in the Southern Baptist Convention.

Dr. Chuck Quarles, Dean of the Louisiana College Caskey School of Divinity, wrote a very helpful article published in the Louisiana Baptist Message in August of 2011 that is fitting for this very hour.

As a Baptist state college, state convention, and national convention, we must choose our battles wisely.

What Do Southern Baptists Believe about Divine Sovereignty and Human Responsibility in Salvation?

By Charles L. Quarles

Over the last several years, discussions about divine sovereignty and human responsibility in salvation have intensified in our Southern Baptist context. Labels like “Calvinist,” “Arminian,” and “semi-Pelagian” have been tossed around, often too freely, and this has brought more confusion than clarity to important doctrinal discussions in which we cannot afford to leave room for misunderstanding. I have always resisted these labels. My experience is that people define them in very different ways. My refusal to accept any of the above labels is not prompted by any desire to deceive others or to hide my views. I refuse to accept the labels simply because the issues are too important to leave room for being misunderstood by someone who is using a different “dictionary.”

PrayI am not at liberty to say much right now, but I will share what I can. I was informed yesterday that my site, The Daily Bleat, Drew Wales’ site, SBC Heritage, and LCStudents.org are now blocked on campus internet. Students are no longer able to access these sites via the campus network.

I was also informed that I, and Drew Wales, are officially under investigation by the administration of Louisiana College for possible violations of the student handbook, specifically “making disparaging comments” about Louisiana College and/or college faculty/administration.

That is all I can say right now but I ask for your prayers for the Louisiana College administration, Dr. Joe Aguillard, Drew Wales, and myself. I do not know exactly what will happen in the coming days but will update you when I am able. Thank you for your prayers and support during these difficult times at Louisiana College.

“Paul’s ministry was a tearful ministry and God seldom blesses a tearless one.” – Dr. Chuck Quarles

Below is a video from the Louisiana College Caskey School of Divinity Founder’s Day event. Dr. Quarles’ dedication to evangelism and missions is that of the Apostle Paul.

While Louisiana College burns, a former Louisiana College Board of Trustee member, Pastor Tim Norris of First Baptist Church Livingston, Louisiana, suggests I and other students stop speaking out against the unjust termination of faculty, and the intolerance of theological diversity from the Louisiana College administration, and find another institution of higher education to attend.

LC Students OrgWhile Louisiana College burns, students and parents of students have begun to sign a statement that calls for the Board of Trustees to act immediately regarding several issues at the college.

I join my fellow graduate student Drew Wales in posting a “student statement” at LCStudents.org The one page site lists several issues that are causing students to consider leaving Louisiana College. The five statements of concern are: Continue Reading…

While Louisiana College burns, our Louisiana Baptist Convention Executive Director David Hankins stands on deck. Louisiana College students and faculty, along with Louisiana Baptists, await a clarion call of cooperation from our state convention leader, Dr. Hankins. In light of the deep respect and profound friendship between Dr. Hankins and Louisiana College President Dr. Joe Aguillard, Dr. Hankins has the influence needed to save Louisiana College from splitting apart over theological diversity.

As pointed out at SBC Heritage, Dr. Hankins has a history of calling for cooperation of Southern Baptists. From the book One Sacred Effort, co-authored with Dr. Chad Brand, Dr. Hankins rightly calls Calvinism a non-essential that should not split Southern Baptists who want to cooperate for the spread of the gospel.

lacollegeWhile Louisiana College burns, the internet is abuzz with blog posts, tweets, and facebook discussions from concerned Louisiana College students, Louisiana Baptists, and Southern Baptists from across the United States. Thousands of Southern Baptists have been watching, waiting, and being informed through blogging and social media.

Below is an index to keep up with the many blog posts already up. The index will be updated throughout the next six weeks as more people contribute to the discussion.

Below is an open letter to Louisiana College Board of Trustees Chairman Gene Lee. It is my hope that this letter will be a useful testimony for the Board of Trustees and the community at large.

Please continue to pray for Louisiana College and the business that will take place in the coming days.

Louisiana College President Dr. Joe Aguillard

Note: I am a graduate of Louisiana College and currently a graduate student at Louisiana College’s Caskey School of Divinity. I love Louisiana College and ask you to join me in praying for God’s perfect will to be done.

Louisiana College (L.C.) is burning. The Baptist college, owned by the Louisiana Baptist Convention, is facing the most important six weeks of its history. From now until March 18 when the L.C. Board of Trustees meet, much will take place that will decide the future of the institution. Will the college continue to have Calvinist professors? Will Dr. Joe Aguillard continue to occupy the president’s office at L.C.? A battle is currently taking place that need not take place. Louisiana College is burning.

Can Southern Baptists, especially those of us in Louisiana, continue to cooperate for the sake of bringing the gospel to a lost and dying world? Can Calvinists and non-Calvinists alike join together in cooperation in state conventions, state colleges, and S.B.C. entities for the sake of gospel proclamation and the winning of souls? I believe we can and should!

Whenever men cease to preach these great doctrines of the Bible, drawing them directly from the fountain head, believing something definite, knowing what they believe and why they believe it, and how to prove it from the Inspired Word, then the pulpit soon loses its power. – John Broadus
