A Puritan prayer for this Lord’s Day.

valleyofvisionMy God, I feel it is heaven to please Thee, and to be what Thou wouldst have me be. O that I were holy as Thou art holy, pure as Christ is pure, perfect as Thy Spirit is perfect! These, I feel, are the best commands in Thy Book, and shall I break them? must I break them? am I under such a necessity as long as I live here?

Woe, woe is me that I am a sinner, that I grieve this blessed God, who is infinite in goodness and grace! O if He would punish me for my sins, it would not [wound] my heart so deep to offend Him; But though I sin continually, He continually repeats His kindness to me.

At times I feel I could bear any suffering, but how can I dishonour this glorious God? What shall I do to glorify and worship this best of beings? O that I could consecrate my soul and body to His service, without restraint, for ever! O that I could give myself up to Him, so as never more to attempt to be my own! or have any will or affections that are not perfectly conformed to His will and His love! But, alas, I cannot live and not sin.

O may angels glorify Him incessantly, and, if possible, prostrate themselves lower before the blessed King of heaven! I long to bear a part with them in ceaseless praise; but when I have done all I can to eternity I shall not be able to offer more than a small fraction of the homage that the glorious God deserves. Give me a heart full of divine, heavenly love.

I always find encouragement in reading prayers. One great resource for reading prayers is The Valley of Vision, a collection of Puritan prayers. Another good resource is Prayers of John Calvin from his Commentary on Hosea. This small collection is available for free viewing and download from Monergism.com.

Below is one of Calvin’s prayers from the collection. Continue Reading…

Yesterday, SBCToday.com posted a pastor’s reflections on the SBC Annual Meeting 2012 and upon reading his thoughts there seems to be some confusion as to which “Sinner’s Prayer” resolution passed. Continue Reading…

A Prayer of Contentment

Joshua —  May 11, 2012 — 1 Comment

Heavenly Father,

If I should suffer need, and go unclothed, and be in poverty, make my heart prize thy love, know it, be constrained by it, though I be denied all blessings.

It is thy mercy to afflict and try me with wants, for by these trials I see my sins, and desire severance from them…

When thy Son, Jesus, came into my soul instead of sin, He became more dear to me than sin had formerly been; His kindly rule replaced sin’s tyranny.

Teach me to believe that if ever I would have any sin subdued I must not only labor to overcome it, but must invite Christ to abide in the place of it, and He must become to me more than vile lust had been; that His sweetness, power, life may be there.

Thus I must seek a grace from him contrary to sin, but must not claim it apart from himself.

When I am afraid of evils to come, comfort me by showing me that in myself I am a dying, condemned wretch, but in Christ I am reconciled and live: that in my self I find insufficiency and no rest, but in Christ there is satisfaction and peace; that in myself I am feeble and unable to do good, but in Christ I have ability to do all things.

Everything God has done, is doing, and will do is for his own glory. Out of this comes man’s chief purpose, which is to glorify God and enjoy him forever (Psalm 86; Isa 60:21; 1 Cor 6:20; Rev 4:11).

Regarding God’s glory in the work of justification and the salvation of sinners, SBTS professor Dr. Tom Schreiner writes in his commentary on Romans: Continue Reading…

There is much discussion regarding the use of the phrase “ask Jesus into your heart” during sermons or evangelism events. David Platt recently spoke about the phrase being “superstitious and unbiblical” because it does not communicate the gospel imperative that one must repent and put their trust or faith in Christ alone.

Recently, in an article at SBCToday.com, Pastor Ron Hale fails to understand Platt’s message, asserting that Platt does not believe in prayer accompanying salvation. Hale later erects a strawman in the comments section, “I’ve determined that I’m not going to walk around …fearful that somebody might get saved.” Continue Reading…

Basil Manly Sr., a highly influential early Southern Baptist, served as a spiritual mentor to James P. Boyce, the founding president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS). Manly also served various influential roles as pastor, educator, and college administrator.

Upon request of his young son Basil Jr., Sr. penned this prayer for his son in 1831: Continue Reading…

The Book of Common Prayer is not widely known by Baptists as we have no official religious book outside of the Bible. I believe it would serve all of us well to read other Christian texts beyond our denominational boundaries.

Not only do many non-Baptist Christian texts contain edifying truths, reading beyond one’s normal purview helps to keep a protestant from forgetting he/she is indeed a protester of the doctrinal corruption and false gospel of the Roman Catholic church.

Below is a beautiful prayer of repentance found in The Book of Common Prayer. Continue Reading…

A prayer for this day that the Lord has made:

Love Lustres At Calvary

My Father,

Enlarge my heart, warm my affections,
open my lips,
supply words that proclaim ‘Love Lustres at Calvary.’
There grace removes my burdens
and heaps them on thy Son,
made a transgressor, a curse, and sin for me;
There the sword of thy justice smote the man,
thy fellow;
There thy infinite attributes were magnified,
and infinite atonement was made;
There infinite punishment was due,
and infinite punishment was endured. Continue Reading…

O GOD OF MY DELIGHT,
Thy throne of grace is the pleasure ground of my soul.
Here I obtain mercy in time of need,
here see the smile of thy reconciled face,
here joy pleads the name of Jesus,
here I sharpen the sword of the Spirit,
anoint the shield of faith,
put on the helmet of salvation,
gather manna from thy Word,
am strengthened for each conflict,
nerved for the upward race,
empowered to conquer every foe;
Help me to come to Christ
as the fountain head of descending blessings,
as a wide open flood-gate of mercy.
I marvel at my insensate folly,
that with such enriching favors within my reach
I am slow to extend the hand to take them. Continue Reading…

I began reading through John Calvin’s commentary on Joel and came across one of his prayers. It brought great conviction to me.

Grant, Almighty God that as almost the whole world give such loose reins to their licentiousness, that they hesitate not either to despise or to regard as of no value thy sacred word — Grant, O Lord that we may always retain such reverence as is justly due to it and to thy holy oracles and be so moved whenever thou deignest to address us that being truly humbled, we may be raised up by faith to heaven, and by hope gradually attain that glory which is as yet hid from us. And may we at the same time so submissively restrain ourselves, as to make it our whole wisdom to obey thee and to do thee service, until thou gatherest us into thy kingdom, where we shall be partakers of thy glory, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
