A little over a week ago, news of Dr. Jarvis Williams’ non-renewal at Campbellsville University hit the blogosphere and became one of the most read stories of the week in Southern Baptist circles. One post by Dr. Collin Garbarino on the issue had over 4,300 Facebook shares and 3,300 tweets. Campbellsville University, a Kentucky Baptist Convention Cooperative Program supported school receiving over $1 million in CP dollars, announced the non-renewal which is reportedly over Dr. Williams’ theology. It is a strange time in Baptist life.

Historically friendly camps within the Southern Baptist sphere that banded together to fight the liberals and moderates in the Conservative Resurgence are now not so friendly. Once case in point is the growing fringe of anti-Calvinist fundamentalists within the Southern Baptist Convention, specifically in the Louisiana Baptist Convention, who seem to have started a new crusade, attempting to narrow Baptist orthodoxy.

Shai Linne

Shai Linne’s False Teachers song is currently receiving a lot of attention. The Christian rapper is drawing lines in the sand and calling out popular and widely loved ministers and speakers.

One line in particular speaks to me and I believe speaks deeply to the Southern Baptist Convention.

Louisiana Alumni Magazine ColumnsLast week it was announced that Josh Breland and I were under investigation for posting “disparaging comments” against Louisiana College online. Our blogs, SBC Heritage and the Daily Bleat as well as LCStudents.org, were blocked from the Louisiana College network.

On February 19, 2013 as a result from unwarranted pressure from the administration and at risk of remaining in school and facing charges of student handbook violation I withdrew from classes. The consequences of those charges could entail suspension, which would result in failure. I was not willing to risk my academic record by remaining in school at Louisiana College so I withdrew from classes. Continue Reading…

I have said recently on this blog and elsewhere that a battle over Calvinism need not take place here at Louisiana College, the Louisiana Baptist Convention, or in the Southern Baptist Convention.

Dr. Chuck Quarles, Dean of the Louisiana College Caskey School of Divinity, wrote a very helpful article published in the Louisiana Baptist Message in August of 2011 that is fitting for this very hour.

As a Baptist state college, state convention, and national convention, we must choose our battles wisely.

Can Southern Baptists, especially those of us in Louisiana, continue to cooperate for the sake of bringing the gospel to a lost and dying world? Can Calvinists and non-Calvinists alike join together in cooperation in state conventions, state colleges, and S.B.C. entities for the sake of gospel proclamation and the winning of souls? I believe we can and should!

For the past several months I have joined Drew Wales, my friend and fellow blogger at SBC Heritage, in thinking, reading, and occasionally blogging (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) about confessionalism in the Southern Baptist Convention.

Last night a brother sent me a link to a quote by Ross Douthat. The quote is from an April 2012 interview in Christianity Today where Douthat discusses his book Bad Religion: How We Became A Nation of Heretics. In the Q&A interview, Douthat speaks to the issue of confessionalism in evangelicalism. I heartily agree with Douthat’s take on the need for evangelicalism to think more seriously about ecclesiology and return to a robust confessionalism.

Southeastern Seminary Trustees Choose Interpretational Method

In 1990, Southeastern Seminary was being asked to abandon its historic confession, the Abstract of Principles (AP), and hold solely to the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message. This charge was being led by Southern Baptist moderates with the intent of abandoning the AP’s affirmation of the Bible being inspired and inerrant. The moderates were seeking to interpret the AP as though it did not affirm inspiration and inerrancy, and when they could not persuade others of their interpretation they pushed to outright abandon the document. The trustees of Southeastern Seminary resisted the change and refused to allow the Abstract of Principles to be read in a vaccum. One issue that must be resolved in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) before theological unity can take place is how to properly interpret the Convention’s doctrinal statement of faith which is the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 (BFM2000). Contradicting interpretations of BFM2000 articles are being held by professors at SBC seminaries and cooperating state colleges. One professor, Dr. Adam Harwood of Truett-McConnell College in Georgia, has recently implied that Dr. Thomas Schreiner of Southern Seminary should step down because Schreiner, according to Harwood’s interpretation of the BFM2000′s article on man, is out of line with the Convention’s doctrinal confession. This leads one to ask, “What is the proper interpretation of the BFM2000?” Continue Reading…

This week, I will graduate from Louisiana College. Joining several other private colleges and religious organizations, Louisiana College has recently sued the federal government over the abortifacient contraception coverage mandated by ObamaCare. Continue Reading…

sbc logoRecently, there has been increasing discussion regarding the Baptist Faith and Message (BFM) in all its editions both on this blog and around the blogosphere. One issue being raised is how to interpret the Baptist Faith and Message 2000. Does the document exist in a vacuum without any historic doctrinal precedent or should the document be read in light of its historic doctrinal precedent. I hope to address this issue in a future post.

Another issue being raised, and the purpose of this post, is whether or not the 1963 and 2000 editions of the Baptist Faith and Message are in any way doctrinal rejections of the 1925 edition, specifically the article on man and imputed guilt. Continue Reading…

In Southern Baptist Identity: An Evangelical Denomination Faces the Future, edited by David Dockery, Albert Mohler speaks to the issue of Southern Baptist confessionalism and returning to a robust historical confessionalism within the Convention. This historic confessionalism is almost entirely void in today’s Southern Baptist churches and associations, at least in practice. Without drawing clear doctrinal boundaries and uniting around clear articles of faith, there is no real hedge against heresy entering the church nor authentic doctrinal unity.
