Jonathan Edwards’ famous sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” is known by believers and non-believers alike. High school seniors and college freshmen usually encounter Edwards’ sermon in English class, and the responses to the sermon are, I surmise, universal. “Boo!” “This guy is all doom and gloom.” “God is love, not wrath.”

R.C. Sproul encounters Edwards’ sermon in The Holiness of GodChapter 9 is titled, “God in the Hands of Angry Sinners.”

Southern Baptist statesman and pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas W.A. Criswell is a much loved figure in Southern Baptist life. Recently, I posted how the author of the Traditionalist Statement Eric Hankins claimed a Criswell soteriology and then drafted a soteriological statement that Criswell would not affirm. It seems one more area that the Traditionalists are in stark disagreement with Criswell is over the doctrine of Imputed Guilt.

This morning, Rick Patrick posted another article at SBC Today arguing that Paul in Romans 5:12 is not communicating that all humans sinned “in Adam” but that man merely receives the consequences of the fall Adam brought forth, not Adam’s guilt. This understanding of original sin and guilt is not the view of historic Southern Baptists nor that of W.A. Criswell as evidenced below. Continue Reading…

Pastor Brad Whitt, co-pastor of Abilene Baptist Church (ABC) in Martinez, Georgia, preached a sermon in view of a call last month at ABC on 2 Samuel 6:1-15. During the sermon, Whitt speaks momentarily regarding the church becoming worldly in its dress and music. Whitt further recalls a story regarding a church near his now previous pastorate in South Carolina where a young man was killed in a drunk driving accident.  Continue Reading…

A few days ago, I posted a video of Pastor Bill Harrell’s recent Romans 9 sermon. In the post, I mentioned that sermons like Brother Harrell’s are leading to the rise of Calvinism within the Southern Baptist Convention.

I realize the video posted was over 45 minutes long and most do not have time to listen to it. In light of this, I share with you Brother Harrell’s preaching and teaching on Romans 9:14-24. Continue Reading…

Yesterday, I listened to a recent sermon on Romans 9 by Pastor Bill Harrell of Abilene Baptist Church. After listening to all 45+ minutes of it, I realized, this is one reason young people are flocking to Reformed theologians, pastors, and schools. The sermon never offers a meaningful explanation of God having mercy on whomever he chooses nor does it address why Paul would think some might be offended at his teaching. Paul’s famous indignant question, “On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God?” is left utterly meaningless.

Since the Conservative Resurgence, Southern Baptists have exhorted each other to return to the Bible. By God’s grace, young people are doing just that! But what they are often hearing in the pulpit are inadequate expositions of the biblical text and unsatisfactory answers to their questions. Many college aged Southern Baptists are waking up and asking, “What I have been taught my whole life? This doesn’t make any sense.” Continue Reading…

David Platt preaching from Exodus 32:1-10 and 1 Corinthians 10:6-13 at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary on February 16, 2012.

New Testament scholar D.A. Carson preaches at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary’s 2012 20/20 Collegiate Conference on Luke 10:25-37.

The order of salvation, or Ordo salutis, is often a topic of conversation among studious Christians. Recently, there has been some discussion regarding great Baptist pastor C.H. Spurgeon’s view. Did Spurgeon believe that regeneration precedes faith? One of Spurgeon’s many sermons sheds light on the matter and gives support that Spurgeon did indeed believe regeneration precedes faith.  Continue Reading…

Benajah Harvey (B.H.) Carroll (December 27, 1843 – November 11, 1914), the founding president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, addresses six Baptist distinctives in his Distinctive Baptist Principles. What absolutely separates me, a Baptist, from other protestants in the reformed tradition is the Baptist distinctive of regenerate church membership and baptism. Regarding this principle, Carroll writes:

IV. Salvation Is Essential To Baptism and Church Membership

Here, if nowhere else, Baptists stand absolutely alone. The foot of no other denomination in Christendom rests on this plank. Blood before water—the altar before the laver. This principle eliminates not only all infant baptism and membership, but locates the adults remission of sins in the fountain of blood instead of the fountain of water. When the author of the letter to the Hebrews declares: It is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sins,” he bases the impossibility on the lack of intrinsic merit. Following the precise idea Baptists declare: “It is not possible that the water of baptism should take away sins.” There is no intrinsic merit in the water. The blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, alone can cleanse us from sin. True, the water of baptism and the wine of the Lord’s Supper may symbolically take away sins, but not in fact. “Arise and be baptized and wash away thy sins” “This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many, for the remission of sins.” Both declarations are beautiful and impressive figures of antecedent fact. Steve Lawson gives an awesome sermon on the Great White Throne Judgment as revealed in the book of Revelation. This video is just a few minutes over an hour long but captivating and solid all the way through. I greatly admire Steve Lawson and his preaching. It is bold and honest preaching like Lawson’s that I look up to and will no doubt model my own ministry from. Praise the Lord for giving the world men of God who proclaim the truths of the Word without fear or shame.

I was reading through a sermon titled Hell-the Furnace of Fire by John MacArthur and near the end he mentioned a letter he received from a Christian broadcasting organization regarding topics that should not be mentioned on air. I was shocked by how a Christian organization could reduce the Gospel with the intention of being more “comforting” as if the complete and true Gospel of Jesus Christ was insufficient or lacking. Pastor John MacArthur presents a great sermon on hell-bound men from the book of John.

“Number one, be self‑righteous…be self‑righteous.  The first step to dying in your sin is to be completely content with the condition you’re in, to feel that you have no need of a savior, you have no severe sin problem, you’re a good person, you may even think you’re better than average.  And certainly when God scores on the little sheet that He keeps, you’re going to have more good points than bad ones.  Imagine yourself having attained some righteousness through religious activity and ceremony and believe that you have no serious sin problem, therefore no need to bow the knee in humble broken repentance before God and plead for the mercy of the Savior, and I guarantee you will die in your sin.”
