In my Romans class today we spent some time looking at Paul’s writing on “the righteousness of God” in Romans 1. My professor read to us some of Martin Luther’s preface to the first volume of his complete works. Before the Lord saved me, I had heard many times of “faith.” I asked a friend’s parents once, “Why do you believe all of that Jesus stuff?” To which they replied, “We just have faith.” This “faith” they spoke of sounded no different than faith in a car’s airbag being deployed in a crash or faith in a football team’s playoff performance. As I understood, faith in Christ was something that originated in man. However, the Bible teaches that saving faith is of and from God.
