Which “Sinner’s Prayer” Resolution Passed? Comparison

Yesterday, SBCToday.com posted a pastor’s reflections on the SBC Annual Meeting 2012 and upon reading his thoughts there seems to be some confusion as to which “Sinner’s Prayer” resolution passed.

The original resolution, submitted by “Trads Document” author Eric Hankins, was heavily revised by the Resolutions Committee with most of the resolution’s wording being completely re-written. The revisions made to the resolution changed the document so much that Calvinists who opposed the original wording were actually raising their ballots for the newly revised edition. Thus, it is fair to say that the “Sinner’s Prayer” resolution that passed was hardly the Hankins resolution submitted. I am very thankful for the wisdom and discernment of the Resolutions Committee and their fine work on resolutions this year.

Below is a side by side comparison of the two documents. You can read Tom Ascol’s commentary on this issue of “which resolution passed” here.

SEBTS President Danny Akin has recently commented on the issue and is well worth your time. You can read it here.

It’s great to see the two side by side. I would have been more comfortable with supporting the committee’s resolution had I seen the significant changes made. I still wish the committee had killed it because, regardless of changes, it still seems in some ways like a swipe at Platt and others, even through I think everyone would be comfortable with the way it’s worded. (Except Bob Hadley)

      Brent,

I voted against it because I believed it was aimed at a misunderstanding of Platt’s recent sermon. Since Platt clarified his previous statements regarding the SP the night before at the Pastors’ Conference, I felt the resolution was unnecessary.

It is a good resolution as it now reads and something, I believe, all Southern Baptists can affirm.

      Thanks for stopping by!
